John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963 at approximately 12:30 p.m. when "the President's motorcade [passed] the Texas School Book Depository Building on the northwest corner of Houston and Elm Streets" (Changed Motorcade Route). Kennedy was hit by bullets in his head and left shoulder. Ten seconds after the shots rang out, the President's car rushed toward Park Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1 pm. After the assassination, Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as president on Air Force One. Shortly before the oath, Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the assassination of John F. Kennedy and patrolman J.D. Tippit. Oswald was assassinated by his friend Jack Ruby two days after the assassination of Kennedy. When Kennedy's casket was at the Capitol, "250,000 people filed by to pay their respects" (Death of the President). Kennedy's funeral was on November 25, 1963 at Arlington National Cemetery and "the funeral was attended by heads of state and representatives from more than 100 countries, with untold millions more watching on television" (Death of the President).

Johnson was afraid he "would be viewed as a coward" if he let the communists take over Vietnam so he stopped Kennedy's plans for pulling out of Vietnam and by 1968, Vietnam was an American war with nearly 550,000 soldiers dying at a rate of over 1000 per month.
